Cabinet Meeting Minutes

The UNSW Law Society Cabinet conducts meetings to make key decisions for the society, approve budget expenditure and appointments.

Note: These minutes are paraphrased accounts of the discussion at the meeting and are uploaded to give our members an idea of the decision-making process in cabinet and the initiatives we discuss. Sensitive items such as the names of executive members, internal disciplinary issues, confidential agreements with sponsors and other external parties have been redacted.

2025 CABINET ElectionS | Nominations Now Open!

All members of UNSW Law Society Inc (‘LawSoc’) are advised that Cabinet elections will be held in Week 3, Term 3 2024.

All candidates and voters must be registered LawSoc members. You can register here for membership.

What is the LawSoc Cabinet?
The Cabinet is the governing body of LawSoc, responsible for the overall governance and financial management of LawSoc. Cabinet members are individually responsible for leading portfolios to run events, projects, and initiatives for the student body, as well as being collectively responsible for the Society overall.

What positions are in Cabinet?
The following positions will be up for election for a tenure commencing on 1 December 2024 to 30 November 2025.

  • Co-President (Male)

  • Secretary

  • Treasurer

  • Vice-President (Activities)

  • Vice-President (Administration)

  • Vice-President (Education)

  • Vice-President (International)

  • Vice-President (Juris Doctor & Postgraduate)

  • Vice-President (Private Law Careers)

  • Vice-President (Publications)

  • Vice-President (Public Interest Careers)

  • Vice-President (Skills)

  • Vice-President (Social Justice)

By nominating yourself, you agree to be bound by the rules governing LawSoc Cabinet elections as outlined in the Constitution and Regulations.
Further guidance regarding campaigning procedure will be sent to candidates once nominations close.

Election Timeline

Nominations Due

  • When: Saturday 21st September (Week 2), 6:00 pm

Candidates Announced

  • When: Sunday 22nd September (Week 2), 6:00 pm

Candidate Q&A Session

  • When: Monday 23rd September (Week 3), 1-2 pm

  • Where: Law162

  • Interested in finding out more about the candidates running for the elections this year? Come along to this Q&A session to hear their strategies and policies for the year ahead and get the answers you need to vote. Keep your candidates accountable and find out how they will serve your best interests!

Campaign Period

  • When: Monday 23rd September (Week 3), 9am – Friday 27th September (Week 3), 5pm

  • No campaigning is permitted outside of this campaign period.

Voting Period

  • When: Wednesday 25th September (Week 3), 9am – Friday 27th September (Week 3), 5pm

  • You will be sent an individualised voting link to the email address you provided to LawSoc. It is essential to note that only REGISTERED members of the UNSW Law Society as at the time of the opening of the polls are eligible to vote in this election. Please ensure that you have signed up to the society.

Announcement of the 2025 Cabinet-elect

  • When: Monday 30th September (Week 4)

  • Results of the Election will be announced on the UNSW Law Society website, the Brief and on relevant social media.

Annual General Meeting

  • When: Friday 11th October (Week 5) 1-2pm

  • All successful candidates must be in attendance. There will be a virtual option.

Arc 2025 Executive Training Day

  • When: Either Sunday 20th October (Weekend of Week 6) or Monday 21st October (Week 7)

  • The elected Secretary and at least one other person are required to attend one of the Arc 2025 Executive Training Days.

Returning Officer

  • The Cabinet is pleased to appoint Celina Chin as Returning Officer for the election. Celina was Vice-President (Activities) of LawSoc in 2022 and brings deep experience and knowledge of the society which will be invaluable in conducting a fair, transparent election. Celina is contactable by email at returningofficer@unswlawsoc.org.

  • Any objections to Celina’s appointment as Returning Officer are due to the Presidents (presidents@unswlawsoc.org) within 48 hours of this notice being released.

Notice of UNSW Law Society Incorporated 2024 ANNUAL General Meeting 

All members are reminded of the upcoming Annual General Meeting of the members of UNSW Law Society Inc (‘LawSoc’). The details of the meeting are as follows:

Date: Friday 11th October 2024

Time: 1–2 pm

Location: UNSW Law Threatre G23 or on Google Meet.

The following business will be transacted at AGM:

  • Accept the minutes of previous Extraordinary General Meeting on 27 February 2024

  • Special Resolution to repeal the current Constitution of UNSW Law Society Inc and adopt the Proposed Constitution as enclosed in the Meeting Pack.

  • Affirm the election of the 2025 Cabinet

Voting procedure
In accordance with Constitution cl. 32.4, and in the interests of efficiency and environmental sustainability, voting for the resolutions will be by a show of hands for the entire EGM unless the Chair motions for voting by ballot, or alternatively 5 or more members motion for voting by ballot.

Proxy voting is permitted as per Constitution cl 11.2.3.4 and cl. 32.5. Please return the proxy form no later than 1:00 pm Thursday 10th October to the Secretary (secretary@unswlawsoc.org.)
